The CCS (Cruise Control System) automatically regulates the throttle valve-opening angle to drive the vehicle at the speed which is set by the driver. Therefore, the driver does not have to keep depressing the accelerator pedal.
The vehicle also can drive at the set speed even uphill or downhill with CCS.
This system is helpful especially when driving on the highway or on a wide country road without taking a rest for a long time.
As a result, the driver can relax and drive comfortably.
Some models have a function to automatically keep the vehicle-to-vehicle distance constant.
1.How to use cruise control
The CCS is operated with the main switch, control switch, accelerator pedal, and brake pedal. The design of the control switch varies depending on the model.
The control switches have five operating modes: set, coast, resume, accelerate, and cancel.
2.Setting CCS at a desired speed
(1)Push and release the main switch (located at the end of the cruise control lever). The power indicator light will light up.
(2)Depress the accelerator pedal to obtain the desired vehicle speed (between approx. 40 km/h [25 mph] and 200 km/h [124 mph]).
(3)Push the cruise control lever down and release it; this will turn on the SET/COAST control switch.
The vehicle speed when the lever is released is stored in the cruise control ECU memory and the vehicle speed for the cruise control is set. This vehicle speed stored in the memory is called set speed.
3.Acceleration under control of CCS
(1)Resetting to a higher speed:
There are two methods: one is using the control [switch] and the other is using the accelerator pedal.
<1>Using the control [switch]:
Push the control [switch] up to turn on RES/ACC until the speed reaches the desired speed.
Release the control [switch] when the speed has reached the desired speed.
<2>Using the accelerator pedal (a quicker way):
Obtain the desired speed by depressing the accelerator pedal.
Push the control [switch] down (to SET/COAST), and release it when the speed has reached the desired speed.
(2)Resetting to a lower speed:
There are two methods: one is using the control [switch] and the other is using the brake pedal.
<1>Using the control [switch]:
Push the control [switch] down to turn on SET/COAST until the speed reaches the desired speed.
Release the control [switch] when the speed has reached the desired speed.
<2>Using the brake pedal (a quicker way):
Obtain the desired speed by depressing the brake pedal.
Push the control [switch] down (to SET/COAST) and release it when the speed has reached the desired speed.
4.Canceling cruise control function
Cruise control will be automatically cancelled if any of the operation mentioned on the left occur. Cancellation methods through are called manual cancellation. Manual cancellation is performed by the driver.
For the conditions in and , cancellation is conducted automatically by the cruise control ECU depending on the driving conditions.
5.Restoring set speed function
Turning on the RES/ACC [switch] will restore the set speed if it has been temporarily cancelled by one of the methods mentioned on the left (No., , , or ) as long as the vehicle speed has not decreased below 40 km/h [25 mph].
Note, however, that turning the main switch off, or in the cases of No. or will permanently cancel the set speed.
If the driver wishes the CCS to resume operation, it must reset the desired speed in memory by turning the main switch back in and repeating the setting operation explained above.
6.Control CCS
There are two types of CCS, cruise control ECU controlled type and ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System-intelligent) controlled type.
The explanation in this training material is based on the cruise control ECU controlled type.
